Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system which is made up of a type of white blood cell (lymphocyte). It is located in lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils and bone marrow. The lymphatic system helps body fight infection and disease. Two types of lymphoma are non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Hodgkin Lymphoma. There are many types of treatment for lymphoma. The treatment options depend on the types of lymphoma, stage of the lymphoma and general health.

Biologic Therapy

Biologic therapy treatment is to increase body natural ability to fight cancer. It does this giving boost to immune system. There are several kinds of biologic therapy:

►  Monoclonal Antibodies
These are drugs like Rituxan, which directly target lymphoma cells and do not harm normal cells. This drug knows exactly where to go in the body.

►  Radioimmunotherapy
These are therapies which have a radioisotope attached to them. These “guided missiles” are able to destroy cancer cells because they attach to the lymphoma and deliver small doses of medicine to the cells.

►  Interleukin 2
This is the medicine that activates the immune system so that it can kill cancer cells.

►  Vaccines
These are treatments that help the body protect itself against the lymphoma.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy treatment uses drugs to kill cancer cells and shrink the cancer tumors. Other than that, chemotherapy drugs may also affect healthy cells and cause side effects like hair loss or mouth sores.

Radiation therapy

This treatment uses radiation (high energy x-rays) to kill cancer cells. The treatment often only takes place in the part of the body where the lymphoma is located.

Transplants

Transplant treatment can help bone marrow make new health blood cells, some stem cells which immature cells that will grow up into red blood cells, white blood cell and platelets may be taken with a special machine before chemotherapy is given. Then, these cell are transplanted into the body. These transplanted cells will then find their way to the bone marrow and restore it. Besides, it can build healthy new blood cells.

There are two types of transplant:

►  Autologous transplants
This transplant uses the people own bone marrow or stem cells.

►  Allogeneic transplant

This transplant uses bone marrow or stem cells from a donor.
